Reducing Risk in Using Technical Computing Algorithms

By Dr. Christian Hansen, Baker Hughes, and Bill Chou, MathWorks

To optimize the drilling process and lower the cost of operations, Baker Hughes’ Dynamics & Telemetry group developed a sequence prediction algorithm that enables downhole data to be decoded quickly and reliably during drilling operations. This advanced decoding algorithm, which is integrated into the company's surface system, supports an approach known as measurement while drilling (MWD). The system enables more accurate wellbore positioning, making drilling operations cost-effective and allowing operators to drill complex wells with less nonproductive time (NPT). This paper describes how engineers used automatic code generation to employ this new workflow, which reduced the number of code defects and lessened the time required to fix bugs.
