Samsung UK develops 4G wireless systems with Simulink

Model-Based Design and simulation benefits next-generation mobile communication research

CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom. - (04 Jul, 2005)

London-based Samsung Electronics Research Institute (SERI) is using Simulink ®, from The MathWorks, to unify baseband algorithm development and physical layer research for its 4G wireless technologies. The  at SERI uses Simulink to develop algorithms and to create models of 4G communications systems. It uses blocks from the Communications Blockset and the Signal Processing Blockset to speed model development.

SERI is involved with industry-wide research projects in the EU Framework Programme and, Simulink use has contributed to aggressive development milestones being met.

SERI needed a development platform that enhanced and streamlined the group’s data analysis, algorithm development, and simulation capabilities along with facilitating cross-organisational collaboration and knowledge sharing. It also needed the development platform to enable it to compare and integrate physical layer transmission chains.  In addition to the technical and organizational challenges, SERI faced a tight schedule imposed by the project consortium for producing simulation results for proposed technologies. Simulink met all these requirements.

“Our development deadlines are strictly defined by the project schedule. To meet these deadlines, we needed an easy way to maintain intellectual property developed by multiple sources within our team,” explains Dr. Thierry Lestable, senior researcher at SERI. “Additionally, on our EU projects, we needed a common software platform and library to simplify interfacing with and integrating contributions from other consortium members.”

SERI standardised on MathWorks tools to develop their next-generation wireless technologies. They're also migrating all their existing algorithms to Simulink to facilitate their reuse in future development initiatives. With limited experience with Simulink, SERI worked with MathWorks Consulting to accelerate this transition.

“MathWorks Consulting enabled us to reach our delivery deadlines by supplying us with valuable advice and by building parts of the models based on our technical requirements,” Lestable said. “MathWorks Consulting also accelerated the debugging process, and their advice on designs has
been very helpful.”

The SERI team also uses Simulink to integrate C and C++ code into its simulations. By integrating custom code, the team can include algorithms from other consortium partners as well as their own proprietary optimised implementations of algorithms, once the generic models are complete. Their own algorithms will ultimately become part of SERI’s patent portfolio.
