Visualizing Simulink 3D animation with Simulink Real-Time

I'm attempting to drive an animation made with Simulink 3D using signals taken from my real-time target. I understand that I need to run the model in external mode and have made sure the VR Sink block's signals are selected under the External Mode Control Panel. I can build and run the model on the target computer but no changes occur in my Simulink 3D animation. Are there other settings that need to be adjusted to get this to work? I haven't had much luck with the documentation.
