Description

The AVL Real-Life Testing framework provides a bridge between simulation and reality. It enables users to develop and optimize vehicle subsystems long before their first use on the road. 

AVL InMotion, a part of this framework, lets users:

  • Develop and test hybrid and electric vehicles
  • Perform misuse testing (e.g., handbrake turn, popping the clutch) and network testing (e.g., brake, powertrain, assist systems)
  • Simulate difficult vehicle situations, such as sidewalk contact when parking with a hybrid vehicle, or starting on snow with an electrically driven axle
  • Measure consumption of cars and heavy-duty vehicles (media and consumer report tests) using realistic drives in which a predefined route is simulated
  • Simulate various driver characteristics—from defensive to normal to aggressive—to calculate realistic consumption
  • Access a library of various driving conditions to be virtualized online (testing grounds, Pike's Peak, Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße, and more) for virtual test drives

AVL InMotion, powered by CarMaker, is based on a complete virtual vehicle environment (VVE). The VVE consists of detailed and precise models, which together simulate the complete dynamics of a driving vehicle. The driving tests with AVL InMotion can be performed as on a real test track. The virtual vehicle carries out all important driving maneuvers and is controlled by a virtual driver who is able to learn the limits of the vehicle the way a real test driver would. The VVE can be used as an open integration platform to which users can connect their own tools and models. All models are fully integrated in Simulink®, so users can modify or replace them with their own Simulink models—for example, a drivetrain or steering system model. Physical hardware components, such as single ECUs or complete lab cars, can also be integrated.
