The MathWorks, Ltd. has comprehensive experience in the digital signal processing (DSP) field. This group, led by by Dr. Gerry Cain, is active in digital filter design, modulation analysis and design, spectrum analysis, and statistical signal processing. Applications include instrumentation, audio systems, and advanced data analysis, but have a special focus on modern communication systems.
The group has carried out Simulink simulation work for customers in the wireless LAN area and is involved in numerous telephony and data transmission applications. Expertise centres on the Physical and Data Link Layers of the OSI Reference Model, with advanced capabilities ranging from detailed device and subsystem modelling to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and related technologies, such as dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF) and discrete multitone modulation (DMT). Nonlinear system modelling and associated compensation strategies are particular strengths of the group.
Work is underway in both 2+ and 3rd generation communications for both the wireless and wireline sectors. Emphasis is on advancing and evaluating novel waveshaping and modulation schemes for efficient "bridging systems," such as EDGE, which will help usher in much higher digital data rates for end users than is possible under currently deployed GSM mobile or fixed DSL systems.
